They complain about the excess, then plan for more

The bottleneck in the 2026 design workflow is cognitive, not budgetary. And the profession complaining about too many tools is the same one planning to add more.

Time to learn tools (55.7%), too many tools to evaluate (53.0%) and quality of AI output (52.2%) are separated by 3.5 points. Budget (34.2%), security (28.9%) and engineering constraints (19.4%) come well after.

The three biggest blockers are all talking about the same thing: excess. Too many things to learn, evaluate and review. It isn't a lack of money or of permission. It's a lack of attention.

That inverts a common assumption inside companies: that the brake on AI adoption sits in procurement or in security. For most of the designers surveyed, the brake is in the day itself: there's no time to learn the new tool, because there are three new tools a week to evaluate.

71.1% added AI or made it central in six months. Only 9.9% say nothing changed. And 3.8% consolidated tools: the smallest number in the entire survey.

The gap between startup (38.8%) and enterprise (34.7%) on “AI is central” is 4.1 points. The narrative of the stuck large company is out of date. The ones falling behind are agencies (28.6%), maybe because of the bill-by-the-hour model, and students (21.7%), which suggests education hasn't caught up with practice.

South America came in with 49 responses (3.3%). Add Central America and the Caribbean and all of Latin America is 58 people, 3.9% of the sample. That's enough to say the region took part. It's not enough to say anything about Brazil.

My bet is that here, two blockers weigh more than in the global average: budget and procurement (34.2% globally) and the dollar cost of every subscription. And that the “don't use” tribe from the first article is bigger. But it's a bet. The way to know is to ask.

What to do on Monday: take inventory. List every tool the team pays for or uses every week. Mark the ones that solve the same problem. Adopt a “one in, one out” rule for ninety days. And answer the pulse survey when it arrives.
